Traffic on the Northern Sea Route soars more than sevenfold in 2011

The volume of transit cargo transported along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in 2011 reached 820.8 thousand tons, which is as much as 7 times more than a year before, an official said.

Chairman of the North Chamber of Commerce Anatoly Glushkov told the business summit of the Association of Chambers of Commerce of the Northern Territories and Areas in the Arctic, which began yesterday in Arkhangelsk that "the growth and trends of transit voyages on the Northern Sea Route is obvious. In 2010, only 111,000 tons of transit cargoes were hauled along the Northern Sea Route, and in 2011, the volumes made up 820,800 tons. This year Rosmorflot expects a more significant growth."

He noted that the NSR remains the major transportation artery for the Arctic regions and affects the development of the entire infrastructure, social and economic spheres.
