Admiralty Shipyards lays keel of 636 project submarine for Russian Navy (photo release)

St. Petersburg-based Admiralty Shipyards today, August 17, 2012 held a solemn keel-laying ceremony for the submarine Staly Oskol of 636.3 Project for the Russian Navy, the correspondent of PortNews reports.


The Stary Oskol submarine of 636 Project Varshavyanka (Improved Kilo class) is the third in a series of submarines, built at Admiralty Shipyards for the Navy. The series lead ship was laid down in August 2010 and was named "Novorossiysk", the second submarine "Rostov-on-Don" was laid in November 2011. Submarines of the modified 636 projects feature enhanced (compared to previous projects) combat characteristics.

Ship’s main characteristics: speed: surfaced - 17 knots, submerged - 20 knots, depth of hold, operational - 240 m, maximum - 300 m. Endurance - 45 days, complement - 52 people, displacement, surfaced - 2350 tons, submerged - 3950 tons.

Admiralty Shipyards JSC (Admiralteysky Verfy) is the oldest Russian shipbuilder, founded back in 1704. The company is part of Western Center of Shipbuilding controlled by United Shipbuilding Corporation. JSC Admiralty Shipyards specializes in design, construction and upgrade of civil vessels and warships for the Russian Navy. To date, the Company has built more than 300 submarines (including 41 nuclear-powered subs) and 68 deep submergence vehicles and ROVs. The shipyard has been executing scores of contracts for domestic and foreign customers. There are two series of six submarines being under construction: the 636.1 project to foreign naval forces and the 636.3 project for the Russian Navy. Currently, the shipbuilding company conducts sea trials of the RV Akademik Treshnikov being built for the Russian Antarctic Expedition.
