Cargo traffic at Port of Riga in Jan-Jul up 4.4% to 20.8 million tonnes

Latvia based Free Port of Riga in the January-July period handled more than 20,8 million tonnes of different types of cargo, which represents a 4.4% growth on the previous year results, the Port Authority told IAA PortNews.

In the reporting period handling of coal increased by 12.3% to 8,269,600 tonnes, of wood pellets — jumped by 33.6% to 508,100 tonnes. Ore shipments grew by 37.6% to 96,800 tonnes. However, oil products volume plummeted by 28.1% to 2.5 million tonnes.

Container traffic at the port was up 7.8% to 264,400 TEUs.

Passenger traffic also increased by 6.2% to 514,360 people, including 49,925 guests of cruise ships (-13.6%).

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2017, the port handled 33,674,700 tonnes of cargo.
