Maersk provides new Asia-Europe BAF calculation formula
Maersk will widely introduce a new system of calculating bunker surcharges for the Far East/Europe, intra Europe and Europe-Middle East and South Asia trade lanes, Hong Kong Shipping Gazette informs.
"Our BAF Calculator lets you work out the cost in any given corridor," said the Maersk website statement. "Just type in the load and the discharge countries, then select the container type."
Maersk Line, the biggest container shipping company in the world, introduced the new method in March in preparation for a widespread introduction on January 1, 2009, though it will not apply to Asia-Middle East, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka trades until July 1 next year.
Applied on a revenue neutral basis, new BAF increases and decreases will be offset by an equivalent adjustment in the base rate, said Maersk. The calculation formula is built on fuel consumption, transit time, trade imbalances and tracks bunker price fluctuations.
From effective October 1, Maersk's BAF will be for the Far East-Europe, westbound: US$720 per TEU, $1,440 per FEU; eastbound: $240 per TEU, $480 per FEU. North Europe to the Mediterranean and Black Sea in both directions: EUR270 (US$392) per TEU, EUR540 per FEU. Europe-MidEast and south Asia, eastbound and westbound, $465 per TEU, $930 per FEU. All apply to dry and reefer boxes and will be revised monthly.
