FEFC up 3.2pc in July westbound TEU, up 7.5pc in first 7 months
ASIA-EUROPE volumes continue to rise according to Far Eastern Freight Conference (FEFC) statistics, which record a 3.2 per cent year-on-year westbound container throughput increase in July, and a 7.5 per cent jump to 5.75 million TEU in the first seven months.
FEFC member lines' westbound volume was 863,864 TEU, an increase from 836,916 TEU in July 2007. Regionally, the Far East-to-North Europe volume was up five per cent to 569,425 TEU, while the westbound trade from Asia to Mediterranean ports remained the same at 294,439 TEU.
Eastbound July numbers were not available, but the conference reported June's backhaul was off year on year, 5.4 per cent down to 325,237 TEU. Eastbound volumes in the first half were down 2.9 per cent to 1.8 million TEU.
