The transport cost of the service is 40 per cent less than that of road transport. The route starts from Jining port and ends at Yangzhou port alongside the Grand Canal southwards for 500 kilometres. The single round journey takes seven days. Bulk cargo from the Jining hinterland can also be shipped to South China via the route, said the news agency.
The provincial river transportation has rallied in recent years with Jining port handling 40 million tonnes in 2007.
