New Zealand starts exporting logs in boxes

Shortage of ships for handling bulk logs has made exporters use containers, which are a viable and cost-effective alternative. For example, Auckland Regional Council says its Wiri inland port will be exporting logs in shipping containers starting from 1 October 2008.
The Port of Tauranga is already shipping 5000 containers of logs a month, but does not pack the containers. However, logs being handled will have to be fumigated. Although there were concerns the log-handling containers would be damaged, the growing trade has alleviated these fears.
