Container volume at the Port of Tacoma down by 8% in August

Container volume at the Port of Tacoma in August declined nearly 8 percent to 142,570 TEUs, with export volume slowing but still a bright spot for the year.
After a slow start this year, the port’s overall box volume through August was flat compared to the previous-year period, down 1.7 percent to 1.23 million TEUs. Over that span full container imports decreased 6.9 percent to 424,918 TEUs, while exports increased sharply, by nearly 20 percent, to 338,645 TEUs.
The pace of container export growth at the port, however, slowed in August, up 3.3 percent to 34,326 TEUs.
Domestic container volume, mainly to Alaska and Hawaii, was also flat through August, decreasing 2.2 percent to 340,054 TEUs.
Tacoma’s intermodal lifts continued to decline by double-digits -- by 12 percent in August to 282,481.
August was also a tough month for the Port of Portland in Oregon, with total container traffic declining 12.8 percent to 22,329 TEUs.
Total volume at the Columbia River port through August fell 7.9 percent to 162,153 TEUs. Inbound containers decreased 1.7 percent to 72,618 TEUs; outbound boxes dropped 12.4 percent to 89,535 TEUs.
Port Metro Vancouver in British Columbia continued to lead Pacific Northwest container volume, posting overall growth of 3.5 percent through August to 1.67 million TEUs. Full import containers increased 2 percent to 838,744 TEUs, and full export boxes climbed by 8 percent to 649,431 TEUs.
