Maersk Line ranked as the most reliable among top-20 world container carriers
Maersk Line has been ranked number one both in Capacity Ranking and in Reliability Ranking among the world’s top-20 carriers.
The ranking is contained in the latest Drewry Shipping Consultants report detailing schedule reliability for 58 container lines. The Drewry report measures both global and trade lane reliability.
The current ranking was based on measurements performed between April 1st and June 31st 2008, and are based on tracking of 1,935 vessel arrivals being compared to scheduled arrival dates.
The report stated that a vessel is “on time” if it arrives on the scheduled day or on the day immediately before the scheduled day of arrival. Maersk Line’s score was 76% on-time performance for the period from April to June 2008, a good improvement on the previous period from January to March 2008 in which it scored 63%.
According to the Drewry report, the schedule reliability survey for the second quarter of 2008 showed a good improvement in timeliness of container services on most of the major trade lanes when compared to the previous quarter.
“The level of on-time arrivals stood at 55% during second quarter 2008, as compared to 49% of first quarter 2008. On a year-on-year basis the schedule reliability is almost at par with same period in 2007.
“The improvements in reliability comes despite the increase in carriers who are introducing slow-steaming practices on some of their services”, the report stated.
Maersk Line and its sub-brand, Safmarine performed very well in the quarter and are clear leaders in regards to schedule reliability for this period. Maersk Line’s reliability is its highest for over two years.
All this comes at a time when many of Maersk Lines’ direct competitors are failing to see a significant improvement in their schedule reliability, with half of the top twenty carriers by capacity being on time in less than 50% of cases.
A total of 20 trade routes were monitored to compile the report. The routes include Asia/Australia/NZ/South Pacific, Asia/ECSA, Asia/Europe/Med, Asia/Africa, Europe/Med/Africa, Europe/Med/Carrib/Central America, Transatlantic and Transpacific among others.
Maersk Line and Safmarine recorded high schedule reliability arriving on-time 92% of the time on the Asia/Africa trade route and 62% on the Europe/Med/Africa trade route.
