Taiwan's Yang Ming Marine launches two new vessels
Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. , Taiwan's second-largest shipping line, launched two new container ships Friday, increasing the number of vessels in its fleet to more than 100.Lu Feng-hai, chairman of Yang Ming, and Cheng Wen-lung, chairman of CSBC Corp. Taiwan -- the builder of the two ships -- jointly presided over the launching ceremony for YM Upward and YM Enhancer at CSBC's deep-water wharf in the southern port city of Kaohsiung.
YM Upward can carry 4,250 containers, known as 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) , while YM Enhancer has a capacity for 8,241 TEUs. Both ships are equipped with the newest satellite navigation facilities and fully automated equipment.Earlier this year, Yang Ming took delivery of four other container ships -- YM Eminence, YM Elixir, YM Uberty and YM Utopia. By the end of this year, after two more container ships are completed and delivered, the company's fleet will include 34 container ships.Yang Ming executives said the company plans to have 48 more vessels of different types built within the next five years.
