Canon said it would use the facility at the Taichung Port to roll out DSC frames and raw materials to produce cellphone cases, with the proposed project to cost some NT$4 billion (US$124.22 million).
Aiming to tap the promising future of the islands economy, Canon Taiwan is building a new plant at the Taichung Export Processing Zone, with the plant to be completed sometime next June. The proposed new plant will focus on producing interchangeable lens for single-lens reflex cameras. A decade has passed since Canon Taiwan built its first plant in Taiwan.
Canon Taiwan said its parent feels very confident about Taiwans economic prospects, hence plans to increase investments on the island.
The proposed Canon Taiwan plant will be a four-storey building with a basement, and will start up volume production next August.
Canon Taiwan achieved some NT$4.5 billion (US$139.75 million) in total sales last year, and aims to generate total sales of NT$6.2 billion (US$192.54 million), NT$8.4 billion (US$260.86 million) and NT$10 billion (US$310.55 million) in 2008, 2009 and 2010, respectively.
Some 600 more workers will be hired for the new plant, said Canon Taiwan, bringing its staff size to 3,000.
