SCI takes delivery of India’s largest VLCC

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME)’s shipyard at Okpo served as the location for the naming ceremony of the 3,19,000dwt VLCC Desh Viraat yesterday. The vessel, which is the largest crude-oil vessel under the Indian Registry, is the first of two sister vessels on order from DSME for the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) and will add to the company’s ability to meet rising Indian energy demand.
Thiru. T.R. Baalu (pictured), India’s Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways, presided over the naming ceremony. Congratulating DSME and SCI for successful completion of this project, he stated that this vessel would prove crucial to India in the coming months as the country’s energy requirements are continuously on the rise and its proven crude reserves are limited, making the import of crude oil inevitable. “In case DSME continues to provide shipbuilding offers to the Indian shipowners and SCI at competitive prices, I am sure it would benefit both organisations”, the Minister added.
The naming ceremony of two other container vessels (MV SCI Chennai and MV SCI Mumbai) for the national carrier will take place at Hyundai Samho Shipyard today.
