In January-September 2008, the ports of Latvia handled 47.534 million tonnes of cargo (+0.8%, year-on-year), BNS agency learnt from Latvia’s Ministry of Communications.
In the reported period transshipment of loose dry cargo amounted to 22.019 million tonnes (+13.1%) including 13.225 million tonnes of coal (+26.6%), 3.322 million tonnes of chemical cargo (-17.6%), 1.128 million tonnes of wood chips (-10.3%).
In the 9-month period, Latvian ports handled 18.229 million tonnes of liquid bulk cargo (-7.6%, year-on-year), Gudok refers to Interfax. Transshipment of oil products totaled 15.704 million tonnes (-7.7%), crude – 1.393 million tonnes (-24.5%). Transshipment of general cargo fell by 8.4%, year-on-year, to 7.286 million tonnes including 2.949 million tonnes of timber (-21.7%), 1.604 million tonnes of containerized cargo (+2.3%), 1.549 million tonnes of ro-ro cargo (-7.2%).
In January-September 2008, the port of Riga handled 21.941 million tonnes (+13.8%), Ventspils – 21.333 million tonnes (-10.6%), Liepаja – 3.294 million tonnes (+12.1%). There are three large and seven minor ports in Latvia.
