Throughput of Klaipeda port up 13% to 23.1 mln t in Jan-Sep 08

In January-September, 2008, the port of Klaipeda (Lithuania) handled 23.144.9 million tonnes of cargo (+13.2%, year-on-year), the port’s materials read.

In the reported period, transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 8.515.7 million tonnes (+19.6%), dry bulk and loose cargo – 7.559 million tonnes (+19.3%), general cargo – 7.070 million tonnes (+1.3%).

The port’s container throughput increased by 19% to 278,671 TEU. Transshipment of ro-ro cargo amounted to 156,501 units (-5.8%, year-on-year).

In the reported period, Butinge terminal handled 6.861.9 million tonnes of crude oil (+82.3%, year-on-year).

In September the port of Klaipeda transshipped 2.47 million tonnes of cargo (+11%, year-on-year).

Klaipeda State Seaport is the northernmost ice – free port on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.

19 big stevedoring companies, ship - repair and ship – building yards operate within the port and all marine business and cargo handling services are being rendered. The annual port cargo handling capacity is up to 40 million tons.

The port is capable of handling large-capacity vessels: 70,000-dwt dry cargo carriers and 100,000-dwt tankers.
