Port of Klaipeda throughput rises 23.1% to 24.5 million tons

Cargo traffic at Lithuania’s port of Klaipeda in January-August grew by 23.1% compared to the same period last year, to 24.5 million tons, the Port Authority said.

 

In August, cargo throughput increased by 17.1%, to over 3 million tons. Monthly volume of liquid bulk rose 19.6% to 880,918.2 tons, bulk cargo totaled 1,272,034.2 tons (+32.4%), general cargo volume fell 2% to 847, 953.4 tons.

 

Shipments of fertilizers surged by 65.1% from last year’s numbers, to 1,154,462.9 tons, of petroleum products – dropped 4.2% to 681,569.1. Handling of rolling cargo rose by 3.9% to 22,861 units.

 

Monthly container traffic increased by 13.2% to 26,849 TEUs. The number of passengers in August declined 14% to 40,878, carried by cruise ships - by 42.4% to 3,651 people.

State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. Currently, there are 17 stevedores, shipyards, other companies operating at the port, providing ranged forwarding and logistics services. In 2010, Port of Klaipeda cargo throughput increased year-over-year by 10.9%, to 31.27 million tons.
