Stena line opens terminal in the port of Rotterdam

Wednesday, 15 October, Stena Line opened its new terminal in the Europoort area. The location, on the western side of the Beneluxhaven, was taken over from P&O Ferries, which concentrates its activities on the eastern side. Stena invested some € 8 million in modifications. In 2009, the company will start work on the construction of double loading bridges at the terminal in the Hook of Holland. The largest ro-pax ferries in the world will berth here from 2010 onwards. These will have a capacity of 5500 metres on two decks, which will have to be loaded and unloaded simultaneously. The investment costs for the bridges amount to € 10 million.
Since June, the total transport volume to England has been under pressure due to the low pound, high energy prices in England and the credit crisis that hit hard there early on. Flowers and products for the automotive sector are down substantially, general cargo has also suffered, but fruit and vegetables are reasonably stable. The closure of the Channel Tunnel due to fire damage was a bonus.
Despite the declining market, Stena Line does expect to see growth in its three North Sea services in 2008: 370,000 units in comparison with last year’s 359,000.
Hook of Holland - Harwich will go from 165,000 to 173.000, Hook - Killingholme from 78,000 to 90,000 and Rotterdam – Harwich from 110,000 to 115.000.
Stena’s market share on the North Sea routes is 17%, 65% of which is freight, and 7% of the  total market including the short sea (lo/lo) routes.
