Chongqing aims to be southwest China's major traffic hub

Southwestern Chongqing is working hard to become the regional traffic hub of the region in support of the development of the city on the upper reaches of the Yangtze, Xinhua reported.
According to the development plan, Chongqing will build 2,100 kilometres of expressways, 50,000 kilometres of highways in the rural areas and upgrade 1,500 kilometres of truck lanes to form an extensive and convenient traffic network which will connect Chongqing to its hinterland with four- and eight-hour transit times to the cities of Chengdu, Guiyang, Kunming, Nanning, Xian, Wuhan and Changsha.
Chongqing will also develop 1,400 kilometres' high-standard waterway channels and raise its port throughput capacity to five million TEU, or 140 million tonnes, turning itself into the most important shipping centre in western China.
The city will start to build 1,000 kilometres of expressway over five years to connect itself to cities in the region and raise the proportion of waterway cargo crossing Chongqing docks from these cities to more than 40 per cent.
