LA port mulls paying US$10 per TEU to generate new boxes

A proposed Port of Los Angeles marketing programme to pay tenants US$10 per TEU on new traffic through the harbour is being considered in response to a five per cent decline in volume in the first nine months of this year. What is proposed is a one-off payment for each new TEU crossing the LA docks after documentary evidence is produced showing boxes had arrived during a consecutive 12-month period before December 31, 2009. If authorised by the port commissioners, the port would cover any new containers, even diversions from other west coast ports.
The marketing staff report said it may be possible for tenants to attract 350,000 TEU, adding that the new volume would involve a payout of an estimated $3.5 million to annually generate $9.5 million in new container revenue.
