Vuosaari Harbour (Finland) to start operation in November 2008

Vuosaari Harbour in Finland will start operation in November of the current year. It will take over the main volume of foreign trade cargo. According to Morskoi Bulleten, ro-ro vessel Finnstar of Finnlines was the first vessel to call on the new harbour in Helsinki.

The Harbor berths will cover the territory of 70 hectares. The Harbour will handle containers and ro-ro cargo. There will be 10 ramps for Ropax ships and 750-metre long cont queues. Two two-storey ramps will make it possible to unload the upper and lower decks at the same time.

Ships will reach the Vuosaari Harbour along a 32-kilometre fairway. The fairway has a minimum width of 200 metres and a minimum depth of 12.5 metres. This corresponds to a draught of 11.0 metres. Traffic will be in both directions except for a stretch of about 10 kilometres, which will have a meeting point for anchorage halfway. Ships less than 25 metres wide can pass each other in this stretch.
