Rolls-Royce wins £8 million design and power contract
Rolls-Royce announced today it has secured an £8 million ($12.7 million) contract to design and power a "highly specialised" buoy tender vessel for India, Ship & Bunker reports.
The vessel is a Rolls-Royce UT 755 S design, which is a development of the UT 755 series, and will be built at the Cochin Shipyard Ltd. in India for delivery in 2015.
Rolls-Royce said it will also supply the main engines, propulsion system, automation and control system, deck machinery, and shaft generators.
"We are very pleased that the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships has chosen a highly advanced Rolls-Royce design and power systems package, focusing on both environmental and operational features, when extending their fleet," commented Rolls-Royce's Per Kristian Furø, General Manager Sales Ship Technology - Offshore.
Rolls-Royce said the vessel will be operating in remote waters off the east coast of India and around the Andaman & Nicobar Islands maintaining and replacing navigational aids and buoys.
Cochin Shipyard Ltd., who has previously built over 20 Rolls-Royce designed vessels, last week claimed a world first by delivering the new "high-tech" UT 755 CD Rolls Royce series of PSV to Shipping Corporation of India (SCI).
