The $850m extension of Jebel Ali's third container port will complete by the end of 2014, DP World's chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem has said.
The company is currently in the midst of a 4,000-metre quay extension to Terminal 2 at the port, which will increase capacity by 1m TEU (twenty foot-equivalent units).
This project, which will allow the port to handle six vesels with a capacity of 15,0000 TEU simultaneously, is due to complete in April next year.
Following this, the Dubai-based company will invest a further $850m in building a third container terminal, which will increase capacity to a total of 19m TEU. Chief executive Mohammed Sharaf said that once expansion at Jebel Ali and at a facility at Santos in Brazil had been completed, they "will contribute significantly to the overall profitability of the group".
