Lada class subs construction to be resumed in 2013, USC says
Russian Ministry of Defense, General Command of the Navy and the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) has reached an agreement to resume the construction of a series of submarines of Project 677 Lada class in 2013, head of the USC Department of state defense order Anatoly Shlemov told RIA Novosti.
Construction of two Project 677 submarines the Sevastopol and the Kronstadt at Admiralty Shipyards was frozen by former Navy Commander Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky because the lead ship the St. Petersburg has not proved the project stated characteristics.
The present Commander Adm. Viktor Chirkov had previously stated about the upcoming resumption of the warships construction after the removal of deficiencies.
The project of Lada class diesel-electric submarines was designed by the Rubin Marine Equipment Design Bureau. The St. Petersburg has been commissioned into service with the Russian Navy.
Another two vessels are under construction at the Admiralty Shipyard with plans to launch four to six submarines by 2015. The Russian Navy has set out a requirement for a total of eight Lada class submarines.
