Tanker sinks in Cebu
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Wednesday that eight crew members of the motor tanker vessel M/T “Golden Rose’’ were rescued after the vessel sank off the waters of Danao City.
The Cebu Coast Guard said that the Golden Rose incurred a hole in its engine room while navigating towards Danao City at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The vessel sank at 2 p.m. just as the eight crewmembers and the captain, Arturo Yap, abandoned ship.
Coast Guard personnel in Danao City immediately conducted a search and rescue operation after receiving a distress call and rescued Yap, 53; Roque Espra, 37; Pedro Barquero, 54; Eduardo Enicito, 44; Jonas Loom, 27; Owen Doqueta, 28, Henrich Plasqueta, 27; and Francis Mutuc, 45.
PCG Commandant Wilfredo D. Tamayo said, “They (survivors) were found to be in good physical condition.”
The eight were safely brought to the Coast Guard Detachment in Danao City. Authorities are now monitoring the area for oil spill.
Tamayo dispatched a team from the Special Operations Group (SOG) and Marine Environmental Protection Unit (MEPU) to ensure that there was no oil spillage that could bring danger to fish, corrals and other marine products.
The ship’s chief engineer, Eduardo Enicito, said the tanker was only carrying 250 liters of fuel oil, enough to reach the Republic Drydock area in Dungoan, Danao City.
Tamayo commended Venerose Sacres, owner of the Rose Shipping Lines, who was the one who first if informed the PCG of the sinking incident.
The vessel departed Mandaue City early Tuesday morning and was on its way to the Republic Dry Dock in Danao City.
