Cargo turnover in Latvian ports down 1.4% to 16.6 mln t in Q1 09
Cargo turnover at ports in Latvia amounted to 16.6 million tons in the first three months of the year 2009, which is 1.4% drop, compared with the results of January-March 2008, according to the Transport Ministry's data.
The only port in Latvia, which registered increase in cargo turnover, was the Freeport of Riga. There were 7.452 million tons of cargo handled at the capital city port in January-March, a 6.5% increase on the January-March 2008 figure.
The Port of Liepaja handled 976,100 tons of cargo, which is a 15.1% year-on-year decrease.
Also the volume of cargo handled at the Port of Ventspils dropped, it totaled 7.842 million tons or 6.1% less than in January-March 2008.
As reported, last year ports in Latvia handled 63.64 million tons of cargo, which is 1.9% more than in 2007.
