Over the first six months of the year 2009, the state-owned joint-stock railroad company Latvijas dzelzcels subsidiary LDz Cargo carried 28.17 million tons of cargo, which is 1.2% more than in the first six months last year, as BC learned from company representatives.
Compared with the first six months last year, import cargo volume increased seven% to 24.86 million tons.
Oil products made up the bulk of cargo transportation by rail: 11.54 million tons of oil products were transported by LDz Cargo in the first six months this year, or 12% more than in the same period last year.
Coal transportation volume increased by 16.9% to 10.31 million tons, and transportation of chemical cargo increased 20.2% to 1.45 million tons in the first half this year.
