Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line (NYK Line) has revealed a model of a highly efficient cargo ship, capable of emitting 70 percent fewer emissions than current ships. The 350-meter (1,148-foot) long Super Eco Ship 2030 is still years away from being built, but the company said it incorporated fuel cells, solar cells and wind power in the model to reduce the ship's energy requirements. The fuel cells would be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Additionally, NYK Line said it improved the efficiency of the vessel by reducing the weight of the hull and improving the hull design to reduce water friction.
The shipping industry is responsible for nearly 3 percent of global emissions but hasn't been subject to previous emissions reductions agreements. Shipping emissions could grow by 150 percent to 250 percent from 2007 levels by maintaining business-as-usual practices because of growth in the sector, according to a study released in May by the International Maritime Organisation.
However, the study said, the shipping industry could significantly reduce emissions at no cost by employing a range of techniques, including speed reductions, kite sails, and upgrades to machinery such as hulls, engines and propellers. The changes could lead to 25 percent to?75 percent reductions in emissions from current levels, the group said.
