Source numbers and services: Nieuwsblad Transport June 26, 2009After the wave of consolidation, Antwerp kept six Far East calls of which 4 are related to shipping lines with local terminal interests. Zeebrugge scores 8 loops of which 6 are attached to terminals of the parents CMA CGM and Maersk Line/APMT. In Rotterdam, 15 of the 23 slings are more or less related to interests in ECT Delta Terminal, Euromax Terminal and APMT Rotterdam. Six services are operated by shareholders in the future Rotterdam World Gateway Terminal on the Second Maasvlakte.
Rotterdam and services
The strong correlation between terminal involvement and call patern hints to one of the basic factors driving the consolidation process. The other two are the rising vessel size and the improvement of hinterland connections (Betuwe Route). During the last five years, this process developed slower than expected, mainly by lack of terminal capacity. This is ‘solved’ by the economic crisis which at the same time forces shipping lines to keep the money within their own holding as much as possible. At present the call pattern in Rotterdam is:
