Cargo traffic of North Western Shipping Company down 20% to 2.8 mln t in H1 09

Cargo traffic of North Western Shipping Company fell by 20% to 2.8 million tonnes in January-June 2009, the company’s PR Department reports.

In the reported period transportation of export cargo increased by 22% to 1.5 million tonnes while transportation of import cargo fell by 45% to 258,000 tonnes. Transportation between foreign ports amounted to 1 million tonnes (- 33%).

In January-June 2009, the company carried 208,000 tonnes of timber (-40%), 213,000 tonnes of ferrous metal scrap (-40%), 295,000 tonnes of fertilizers (-50%). The company attributes the decrease of the volume to partial termination of the company’s fleet operation in the first quarter of 2009 because of the economic crisis.

Meanwhile, transportation of export non-ferrous metal increased three-fold to 161,000 tonnes; transportation of grain doubled to 647,000 tonnes, ferrous metal – to 366,000 (+15%).

The following cargo flows were typical in the first half of 2009: ferrous and non-ferrous metal and fertilizers – from St. Petersburg to European ports of the North and the Baltic Seas; non-ferrous metal  - from Russian southern seaports to the Mediterranean ports; grain – from Azov, Rostov-on-Don and Yeisk to the Black Sea and Mediterranean ports; timber and sawn timber – from Volga-Baltic ports to Scandinavia.

North Western Shipping Company is Russia’s largest carrier specializing in transportation of loose and bulk cargo with batches from 1,000 to 5,000 tonnes. Cargo transportation is carried out by 133 motor vessels including 68 vessels owned by the company and 36 chartered from Volga Shipping. The company carries 6.6 million tonnes of cargo per year.
