MALAYSIA's deputy prime minister has called for an increased use of technology to promote security and safety in the Straits of Malacca, according to the New Straits Times.
Deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made his remarks at the recent Straits of Malacca: Charting The Future conference in Kuala Lumpur.
"If we are to sustain these efforts, more attention has to be given to the role of technology. Maritime and aerial surveillance is advancing at a rapid pace and may soon be available at a fraction of the cost," he said.
"Perhaps this is the right time for us to explore the use of technologies for surveillance, such as long distance day and night cameras, unmanned aerial vehicles and satellite imaging."
The deputy prime minister also recognised the importance of utilising technology systems to reduce the risk of collisions in an area with such dense vessel traffic as the Malacca Straits.
"I would be interested to see how technology-based projects such as the Marine Electronic Highway can contribute to reducing navigational risks," he said.
"This is critical given that vessels traversing the strait were expected to increase to 120,000 by the year 2015 compared with 75,000 last year."
