UK detains Panamanian-flag Ro-Ro

THE UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has detained the Panamanian registered Ro-Ro cargo vessel Jigawa II in Sheerness after inspectors found a large number of serious deficiencies.

The vessel operates between Northern Europe and West Africa. After a port state control inspection on the 15 July, it was revealed the vessel had 27 deficiencies including lifeboats not being properly maintained, corrosion and holes in bulkheads and deckheads and the emergency fire pump not being properly maintained with the exhaust giving off carbon monoxide when run.

Bryan Hopkins, Surveyor-in-Charge, Orpington Marine Office, MCA, said: “The vessel Jigawa II was detained due to the number of deficiencies aboard. The flag state of the vessel was invited by the master to carry out verification of correction of the noted deficiencies. The inspection was resumed after the deficiencies had been rectified and additional verification ISM audit had been carried out. The resumed inspection found more deficiencies that required rectifying before the vessel could sail.”

According to the Equasis database the 1978-built ship is managed by Netherlands-based Hakvoort Transport Shipping. The latest classification information is that it class was withdrawn by Bureau Veritas in December 2007 because of “non-compliance with conditions of class/recommendations”.
