The 59th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) held July 13-17 in London considered different issues including prevention of air pollution from ships including reduction of GHG emissions, safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships, harmful aquatic organisms in ballast water, amendments to MARPOL.
The session also discussed calculation and application of Energy Efficiency Design Index for new ships and Ship Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator as well as the development of a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan.
The development of possible market-based instruments like establishment of an International Compensation Fund for GHG Emissions from Ships or and GHG Emission Trading was considered in general. The above mechanisms to be elaborated within the framework of IMO are to be discussed at the Committee's sixtieth and sixty first sessions (MEPC 60 and 61) in March 2010 and October 2010 respectively.
