Throughput of port Liepaja (Latvia) up 8.8% to 2.26 mln t in Jan-May’14

In January-May 2014, the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 2.26 mln t of cargo (+8.8%, year-on-year). As IAA PortNews learnt from the port authority, transshipment of grain increased 1.79 times to 1.16 mln t, construction materials – climbed by 32.9% to 214,300 t, timber – fell by 19.3% to 187,200 t. 

The port’s container throughput fell by 21% to 1,623 TEUs.  Transshipment of ro-ro cargo cargo increased by 7% to 14,056 units. Passenger turnover fell by 8% to 15,964 passengers. The number of calls climbed by 5% to 618 calls.

The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belarus. In 2013, the port of Liepaja handled 4.84 mln tonnes of cargo.
