Port of Liepaja handled 4.17 mln t of cargo in 8M’17, up 24.4% Y-o-Y

Freight volume handled in the Port of Liepaja, Latvia in January-August 2017 climbed by 24.4%, year-on-year, to 4,170,100 t, the Port Authority says.

In the reporting period, transshipment of coal surged almost 3 times to 906,200 t, wood pellets – by 3.4% to 166,800 t, construction materials – up 23.6% to 407,000 t, oil products - by 46.5% to 267,100 t. Transshipment of grain fell by 11.7% to 1,386,900 t, timber grew by 34.3% to 306,200 t.

Container traffic grew 2-fold to 2,777 TEUs, Ro-Ro – up 23% to 25,806 units.

Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90s of last century at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Liepaja ranks third port of Latvia by handled cargo volume. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2016, throughput of Liepaja port was 5.68 million tonnes.
