Lock No 9 of the White Sea – Baltic Sea Canal put into operation after reconstruction (photo)

Federal Marine and River Transport Agency (Rosmorrechflot) says that reconstruction of Lock No 9 of the White Sea Canal – Baltic Sea (Republic of Karelia) has been completed. The acceptance committee involving representatives of Rosmorrechflot, Administration of White Sea – Onega Basin Waterways, general contractor and other organizations put the facility into operation on 9 November 2017.

The reconstruction works performed between February 2015 and August 2017 were financed by the federal budget under the subprogramme “Inland Water Transport” of the Federal Targeted Programme “Development of Russia’s Transport System in 2010-2020) . Fixed assets value – RUB 549,263,500.

White Sea – Baltic Sea Canal is a unique system of hydraulic engineering facilities and an essential transport artery of the region. Total length – 227 km. The canal opened on 2 August 1933. It connects the White Sea, in the Arctic Ocean, with Lake Onega, which is further connected to the Baltic Sea.
