Portuguese fishermen rescued after week adrift in Atlantic

A Far Eastern Shipping Company spokesman said on Thursday, a container ship, registered in the port of Vladivostok, rescued three Portuguese fishermen who had been drifting for a week on the Atlantic Ocean, RIA Novosti reports.

The three men said they left the port of Olhao in southern Portugal, on October 30 intending to go fishing, but when they were 30 miles off the coast the engine stopped working and they were carried out to sea before being picked up by the Askold container ship.

The Portuguese businessmen raised the alarm by waving life jackets to attract attention, the source said.

They were transferred to a Portuguese naval vessel on Thursday.
