RZD announces conventional ban for loading to Novorossiysk, Tuapse and Kavkaz

Russian Railways has announced a conventional ban for loading of coal, diesel fuel, heavy fuel oil, ferrous metal, grain and timber to stop the flow of trains to the ports of Novorossiysk, Tuapse and Kavkaz, PR Department of North-Caucasus Railway informs according to PRIME-TASS. This measure is to stabilize complicated situation at the North-Caucasus Railway caused by congestion of wagons at the ports because of the storm. Normal loading to the ports will be resumed in at least 5 days after the beginning of favorable weather, experts say.

As of 6.00 a.m. (Moscow time) of November 14,  84 trains wait for unloading at the port stations (two days age there were 65 trains): the destination of 61 trains is the port of Novorossiysk, 16 – Tuapse and 7 – Kavkaz.

The meeting of the railway and port representatives held yesterday at Novorossiysk station resulted in development of a program to solve the problem and in issue of a schedule and procedure for cooperation.

Current weather conditions in the port of Novorossiysk enable planning of unloading 1,100 wagons including over 380 wagons loaded with ferrous metal, over 110 wagons of grain and 230 wagons of diesel fuel. Besides, the grain is being unloaded to the port elevator.

In the port of Tuapse rain prevent unloading of grain though the plan envisions unloading of 130 wagons with coal.

North-Caucasus Railway crosses 11 territorial subjects of the Russian Federation, borders Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The Railway’s track in use is 6,360 kilometers long. It services Russia’s southern ports of the Black, Azov and Caspian Seas. In 2006, the Railway increased transshipment of foreign cargo by 0.5% to 57.6 tonnes. Experts forecast the Railway’s transportation via port stations will grow to 2010 158 million tonnes by 2010.
