IMO rejects 'ocean fertilisation' scheme as too risky

A Committee of the International Maritime Organisation rejected a scheme that would fertilise the oceans with iron nutrients to sequester carbon dioxide as "not currently justified" and too risky.
But the meeting endorsed a "Statement of Concern", while saying that knowledge about the effectiveness and potential environmental impacts of ocean iron fertilisation was insufficient to justify large-scale operations that could have negative impacts on the marine environment and on human health.
The meeting agreed that the consideration of ocean fertilisation falls under the competences of the London Convention and Protocol, but that further study from scientific and legal perspectives was needed.
