According to Ugis Magonis, CEO of LDz, freight tariffs in some cargo sectors could increase up to 15%.
The Latvian port operator Man-Tess, the Latvian transit firm, LSF Trans, and Latvia's potassium chloride forwarding terminal Kalija Parks, stated that the planned hike in freight cargo will make it very difficult to keep operating on profitable basis and will cause damage to the competitiveness of Latvia's transit business.
LDz increased freight tariffs by 6-8% to Ls 5.68 (US$ 10.65 EUR 8.01) per kilometre as of July 1, 2007, up from Ls 4.62, valid since January 2007, Railway Market-CEE Review reports.
