Dragados plans first US terminal

In what would be its first foray into the US, Spain's Dragados SPL has expressed interest to help fund the construction of the new Velasco Terminal at the Texan port of Freeport.
Port commissioner Jimmy Brown has been quoted saying that the terminal could be “anything from a cargo or a container berth” and “with the growth in container trades, we could see this berth becoming a multi-purpose container, break-bulk and rolling stock berth.”
Voters had rejected project funding last year, and Dragados has entered the picture asking for a long-term lease of the new facilities in exchange for its investments.
According to Brown, the project is expected to cost between $80 - $100 million and officials are currently in discussions with Dragados over its submitted proposal.
Brown told local press that the port is slated to cough up some $40 million for its share of the new terminal while the remaining costs are borne by Dragados pending an agreement.
Current plans will call for Dragados to construct the improvements necessary for a container berth such as cranes and final completion will make the new facilities “larger than the original project,” said Brown.
