Dead sailor supposedly from Russian freighter found in Caspian Sea

The body of a dead sailor, supposedly from the sunken Russian freighter Kamyust-1, has been found in the Caspian Sea, the deputy head of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations’ department for Dagestan told Tass.

According to the ministry, the body was found by the crew of the rescue vessel Eprom, which has been working in the zone where the ship went missing for the second day running.

Rescue services received a distress signal from the ship on November 16. The dry cargo ship was on its way from Astrakhan to the Iranian port of Anzali, but failed to arrive to its destination on schedule. According to early information, the Kamyust-1 wrecked and sank about 170 kilometres off the city of Derbent. The crew of 12 evacuated on four rafts.

The Tsentrospas service of the emergencies ministry in Astrakhan received the distress signal. Up to nine vessels participated in the search for the crew, as well as aircraft with a crew of Dagestani rescuers on board.

On Tuesday, two rafts were located, one of them with no people. Three crew members were rescued from the first raft. The fate of the other crewmembers remains unknown.

The ship was carrying 2,200 metric tons of steel feed.
