Together with Right to Play ambassador and athlete Letitia Vriesde, Rotterdam Port president director Hans Smits pulled the container from a shipment headed for Indonesia. 'Where is this 10th mln container of Rotterdam going to?' can be read on the special container. The container is filled with sports supplies from the aid organisation Right to Play, which provides aid to children who have been affected by violence, disasters and poverty.
On the occasion of this milestone, terminals, shipping companies and other businesses in the port help ship a number of containers carrying about 40,000 footballs for aid projects in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tanzania, Lebanon, Indonesia, the Palestinian territories, Ghana and Benin.
Rotterdam port first reached the point of 1 million containers processed in 1974. In 1997 that number reached 5 million. The expectation is that about 25 million container units will be shipped via Rotterdam port each year in the year 2020.
