Ivanov seaks of importance of circular road around Petersburg

First vice-premier Sergei Ivanov participated on Sunday in the opening ceremony of the second stage of the Circular Highway around St. Petersburg, Itar-Tass reports according to RZD-Partner.
This section of the highway runs from the Rossiya Highway to the Narva Motor Road.
“The Circular Highway is necessary for St. Petersburg as air in the direct and indirect sense,” he said at the ceremony. “First, the city is clogged by jams. Secondly, the opening of the highway will improve considerably the ecological situation and save Petersburg citizens from exhaust fumes,” Ivanov added.
The vice-premier thanked all highway builders and designers for successful work, noting that this section is opened ahead of time. Workers of enterprises which had been involved in construction, received awards at the ceremony, taking place right at a four-deck flyover of the Circular Highway and the Pulkovo Highway.
Transport minister Igor Levitin emphasised that “builders of the highway are to put into operation an 89-kilometre stretch before 2008. The final aim is Bronka Village on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland”. According to the minister, “in 2007, the Russian Federation put into operation quite a number of major projects, including five long bridges across Russian rivers”.
St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko warmly congratulated all who had participated in building the highway.
The Circular Highway is called upon to bring transit flows of heavy motor vehicles outside the city and to establish traffic between southern and northern districts of the city, by-passing the drawbridges inside St. Petersburg. Investments in the Circular Highway will total 24.2 billion roubles in 2007 and 30 billion roubles in 2008.
The first section of the highway from the Gorskaya station on the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland to the Priozersk Highway with a length of 21.6 kilometres started operating five years ago. The length of the eastern semi-circular of the highway, open for traffic, totals 64.1 kilometres. It connected the Scandinavia Motor RoadRossiya Highway in the south.
