CT Navigation launches a new Vietnam - Taiwan direct container service

CT Navigation has launched a new direct container route, Da Nang-Kao Hsiung (Taiwan): one voyage every 2.5-3 days.
Nguyen Thu, Director General of Da Nang port, said that on November 22, Magna container ships belonging to CT Navigation docked at Tien Sa port, kick-starting the second navigation routes, linking Da Nang in central Vietnam and Taiwan’s Kao Hsiung, an important transit point on the way from Vietnam to big markets, including the US, Japan and the Republic of Korea.
Prior to that, Wanhai shipping company opened the Da Nang-Kao Hsiung container route (the itinerary is Dang Nang-Hai Phong-China-Kao Hsiung). Meanwhile, CT Navigation launched a route with the opposite itinerary: ships will depart from Taiwan, go past China, then to Hai Phong and Da Nang, and then from Da Nang to Kao Hsiung directly.
With the new route, it will take less time to ship cargo from Da Nang to Kao Hsiung. As planned, a container ship will depart on Thursdays from Da Nang and arrive in Kao Hsiung on Saturdays. Currently, there are 8 goods-carrying trips departing from Da Nang port every week (MCCTransort, Wanhai with two trips a week, Gematrans, Samudera, Megastar, ACL and CT Navigation).
In fact, container transport fees have decreased considerably as a result of the competition among shipping companies. The fee for carrying goods to Singapore now hovers around $200-250/container instead of $450-500/container, while the fee to Taiwan at $300-450/container instead of $800.
According to Mr Thu, the total volume of container goods going through Da Nang port is estimated to reach 52,000 TEU in 2007, an increase of 39% over 2006, including 25,390 import containers (+51%), and 23,500 export TEUs (+43%). Meanwhile, the number of domestic containers was 3,110 TEU, just equal to 75% of 2006’s level.
Mr Thu said that Da Nang port spent VND34bil ($2.12mil) in 2007 to upgrade the capacity of the logistics area of Tien Sa port (Tien Sa port and Han River port are the two ports belonging to Da Nang port). He also said that free storage had been extended from 5-7 days to 11-12 days.
In the last 11 months, the total volume of goods going through Da Nang port has been over 2,53mil tonnes, an increase of 16% over the same period of last year. The figure is expected to reach 2.74mil tonnes, up by 15.6% over 2006, which can bring the turnover of VND150bil, fulfilling 111% of the yearly plan, an increase of 22% over last year. If counting the cargo going through Lien Chieu, 234, My Khe and Song Thu, the total volume of goods passing through Da Nang ports would reach nearly 4.3mil tonnes.
Da Nang port is planning to build a new port in Tho Quang ward in Son Tra district to replace Han River port, which will become a tourism port and a navigation centre for the central region.
