An expansion of Sydney's Port Botany will allow the port to double its trade in bulk liquids, the New South Wales (NSW) state government says.
Plans for construction of a A$69 million (S$87.3 million) second berth at Port Botany are moving forward, NSW Ports Minister Joe Tripodi said.
'The NSW economy continues to grow, increasing the demand for petroleum, chemicals and gases by almost 18 per cent last financial year,' Mr Tripodi said in a statement.
'Almost 675,000 tonnes of bulk liquid moved through Port Botany last year - trade is expected to continue (to) grow and the government is moving to match demand.'
The government-funded project will include construction of a steel pier berth, marine loading arms, firefighting equipment, on-shore support facilities and pipelines from existing sites to the new berth.
The Botany community, industry, government and environmental groups have been involved with an environmental assessment of the project, while bulk liquid stevedore Vopak is the project manager. A timeframe on the completion of the berth has not been released.
