“We will start building the outer harbour before the end of December,” said president of the Tenerife Port Authority, Pedro Rodríguez Zaragoza.
Rodríguez said that while original plans called for 1.8 kilometres of berthing, the final approved project had just 720 metres of berthing.
Reports said that despite the downscaling, Granadilla remained crucial to the port authorities' plans to capture a major share of regional container transshipment traffic and to be an important logistics hub for Africa.
It also remains central to plans to move dry and liquid bulk cargoes away from Santa Cruz (Tenerife's northern port) and to develop a liquefied natural gas terminal.
Rodríguez said construction of the outer harbour would be the biggest part of the project and the whole port should be completed in three years.
He said Tenerife had not yet been able to establish itself as an international transshipment hub, but added: “If we handle local traffic in Santa Cruz and use Granadilla as a complementary port, there are many more options.”
Completion of on-going reclamation at Santa Cruz is scheduled to boost annual capacity there to 800,000 TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units), while Granadilla will be able to handle 500,000 TEUs per year.
