The port’s container volume for the first 11 months of 2007 was 3.95 million TEUs, against 3.35 million last year.
Westports executive director Ruben Emir Gnanalingam said the port’s growth was consistent and would be maintained.
He said in a statement yesterday that the port expected to grow its overall volume by 17% this year, and that its local volume had also continued last year’s momentum by surpassing one million TEUs. “We are expected to notch a 15% growth to 1.23 million TEUs this year, from 1.07 million TEUs in 2006.”
Ruben attributed the four-million TEU milestone achievement to “good teamwork, meticulous planning and a skilled workforce”.
He added that Westports’ productivity was at its peak last week with its operations team recording 250 moves per hour while working on a China Shipping Container Line (CSCL).
