Work on $548 million Naples terminal to begin in April next year

Construction of a $548 million container terminal at the Italian port of Naples will begin in April next year. The Levante New Container terminal will have 670 metres of berth at depths up to 16.5 metres. It will be equipped with eight super post-panamax containers and 22 transtainers.
About $233 million will be funded by the Naples Port Authority while port operator Conateco will invest another $315 million to the construction of the facility, which is due for completion within three years.
Port operator Conateco, a joint venture between China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), will operate the new facility under a 50-year concession.
Pasquale Legora de Feo, managing director of Conateco, says the new terminal, when completed, will have sufficient yard space to handle an additional 1 million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) per year.
The existing 15 hectare site, allied with the four additional hectares of the adjacent Soteco terminal, handles around 500,000 TEUs per year.
Tender process for construction contracts is due to get under way in the coming weeks.
