The contract is valued at approximately 1 bln eur, of which 50 pct is to go to Boskalis.
Boskalis and Van Oord will construct the first phase of the Maasvlakte, a project meant to expand the storage and transport capacity of the Rotterdam harbour, and which has been debated for at least 10 years by successive governments.
Boskalis and Van Oord will build sea defences and the first harbour areas, 2.5 km of quay walls, and the road and rail links needed to provide access to the new Maasvlakte area.
The construction work is expected to start next year and end in 2013. After that, the two companies will provide maintenance for the area.
