Japan sets Russian hake quota in 200-mile zone

Japan increases Russian quota for capturing hake in its 200-mile zone by 450 tonnes or by 16% in 2008, Interfax reports.

The agreement on this was reached at the 24th session of the Russian-Japanese commission on fisheries that concluded at the end of last week, the Russian State Fisheries Committee said.

Both sides have decided that in terms of cooperation in the study of underwater natural resources that the Japanese Fishing Industry Association will give $3.65 million worth of equipment to Russian far- eastern research and educational organizations.

During the session, the delegations sought to strengthen and develop mutually advantageous economic and scientific ties between the Japanese and Russian fishing industries, so that various trade restrictions can be lifted and cooperation in preventing illegal and unregulated fishing can be intensified.
