Japanese transportation group NYK has launched a new feeder service called the Baltic Express (BAX) as part of its strategy to expand its container shipping networks.
The weekly BAX feeder service is scheduled to call at the ports of: Amsterdam, Hamburg, St Petersburg, and Kotka, Finland.
NYK's BAX container service has been created by slot chartering space on the two containerships operated by X-Press Container Line (UK) Ltd on this trade route, a statement issued by NYK said.
It said that the BAX service will initially depart from Hamburg for the Baltic. From March 2008, the feeder service will also introduce calls at Amsterdam. The service will, at either Hamburg or Amsterdam, connect with the Grand Alliance's Asia-Europe liner services, which NYK jointly operates.
"In recent years, the quantity of containers handled in this area has increased in step with Russian economic development. This new service will help NYK provide more stable transportation services in the region," the NYK statement added.
